Introductory EnergyPlus Energy Modelling and Results Interpretation for OBC Part 3 Buildings

Course Summary:

This course provides an overview of the essentials of Part 3 energy modeling using EnergyPlus software. The course will present a streamlined process towards creating a working energy model in EnergyPlus from creating the building envelope to inputting plug and lighting loads and creating HVAC systems, all using free to use software. The second half of the seminar will focus on results interpretation and will be geared towards reviewing EnergyPlus model submissions, focusing on key outputs to verify. Attendees will have the opportunity to follow along for a hands-on building simulation experience during the seminar, however it is not required.

Course Description:

Energy modelling is a process of developing and analyzing the energy performance of a building, typically over the course of a year and in hourly increments.

EnergyPlus is an advanced and powerful energy modelling software which can effectively address the energy modelling performance pathways of the Ontario Building Code Supplementary Standard SB-10, the Toronto Green Standard and other municipal green standards, voluntary green building ratings systems and various incentive programs. The EnergyPlus software can simulate a wide range of advance building envelope, lighting and mechanical systems, and is updated every 6 months.

Energy models are developed by and relevant to energy consultants, architects, HVAC designers, and municipal reviewers. This course is designed for professionals from these disciplines.

The course provides an overview of the essential steps in developing an EnergyPlus energy model, using free to use software. Attendees will be presented with a sample building and shown how to create the building envelope, input loads and create HVAC systems, with modelling tips along the way. Attendees will have the opportunity to follow along with a hand-on experience, however it is not necessary. The course will be ‘bring your own device’, and software requirements will be communicated ahead of time.

The second half of the seminar will focus on interpreting results, specifically focusing on key outputs to verify as part of an internal QC process, as well as key things to look for as a municipal reviewer tasked with verifying the accuracy of energy model submissions. This will focus on key outputs as they relate to Ontario Building Code SB10 and Toronto Green Standard energy modelling reporting requirements

This course will be taught by Adam Barker, an experienced energy modeller and team manager with EQ Building Performance Inc. who specialize in the energy modelling for Part 3 buildings.

Adam is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Engineering technologist (CET) and has a Masters of Building Science (MBSc).

Adam has worked in the construction industry for over 12 years, focusing on energy modelling and energy efficiency of the built environment. He spends his time creating and overseeing energy models and related analyses.

As an energy modeller with EQ Building Performance, Adam applies his expertise in realizing energy savings and finding innovative ways to pursue ambitious sustainability targets in the Part 3 high-rise residential, commercial, institutional and industrial sectors. He provides energy modelling for compliance with Building Code, LEED and Toronto Green Standard, and acts as a 3rd party reviewer, verifying energy targets for LEED projects and incentive programs.  Adam has extensive experience with EnergyPlus, eQuest, Retscreen and EE4 energy modelling software, and in depth knowledge of energy and related codes such as the NECB, SB-10, ASHRAE 90.1, and ASHRAE 62.1.
