E116 ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY
Course Description:
Our planet Earth is witnessing environmental and human change at an unprecedented rate. This course introduces the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability in cities, particularly establishing the theoretical bases and understanding of the broad range of environmental problems that result from exploitation of the natural resources.
Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course the students will be able to:
- Understand the key concepts and processes fundamental to nature, sustainability, sustainable development, and environmental management across Canada.
- Apply planning theories to actual planning practice and develop economic, social, and environmental indicators for measuring sustainability.
- Apply various planning tools and policies to solve specific problems effectively and acquire expertise in resolving environmental problems in the light of existing regulations.
- Understand the complexities, change, uncertainties, environmental issues in cities, and challenges of natural resources and recommend viable long-term solutions.
Instructor:
Olalekan Onilude, PhD
Olalekan Onilude is a sessional lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environment Studies, and Environmental Applied Science and Management Graduate program at Toronto Metropolitan University. He received his PhD and MASc in Environmental Applied Science and Management, and Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainability Management from Toronto Metropolitan University. He also obtained a Graduate Diploma in Project Management – Environmental at Seneca Polytechnic, Toronto. Prior to coming to Canada, he obtained a Master of Information Science, MSc Agricultural Economics, and BSc Agriculture from University of Ibadan Nigeria. His research and teaching interests involve environmental assessment, environment and sustainability, land use change and urbanization, environmental policy, climate change and adaptation.
He has some publications on land use and built environment, urban sprawl, and urban sustainability. Olalekan has been the recipient of the Toronto Metropolitan University Yeates School of Graduate Studies, Dennis Mock Leadership Award for 2020/21.
